SPECTRAGLOTM
Black Light Fluorescent Materials Fluorescence
is the phenomenon by which certain materials absorb "Black
Light" or other ultraviolet energy and re-emit this invisible
radiation in the form of visible colored light. Fluorescence occurs
while the material is being activated by the ultraviolet rays. Once
the radiation is removed, the fluorescent glow ceases. The best
fluorescent responses occur in darkness or under low-level lighting
conditions.
Ultraviolet Light
Ultraviolet light is that radiation
just beyond the violet end of the visible spectrum. It cannot be
seen by the human eye. Ultraviolet light is generally divided into
three groups.
- Long Wave Ultraviolet
(often referred to as Black Light). This radiation
causes fluorescence in thousands of natural and manufactured substances,
such as the SPECTRAGLOTM Fluorescent Materials. It
is generally considered harmless to the eyes and skin.
- Medium Wave Ultraviolet.
Common artificial sources of this radiation are "sun lamps"
used for cosmetic or therapeutic purposes and vitamin production.
Since medium wave UV can seriously burn the eyes and skin, it
should not be used for fluorescent markings and displays.
- Short Wave Ultraviolet.
This radiation is primarily used in laboratory analysis, germicidal
applications and mineral inspection. It can severely burn the
eyes and skin and should not be used for fluorescent markings,
displays, etc.
